چکیده

Spectral maps of Mimas’ daytime thermal emission show a previously unobserved thermal anomaly on Mimas’ surface. A sharp V-shaped boundary, centered at 0 N and 180 W, separates relatively warm daytime temperatures from a cooler anomalous region occupying lowto mid-latitudes on the leading hemisphere. Subsequent observations show the anomalous region is also warmer than its surroundings at night, indicating high thermal inertia. Thermal inertia in the anomalous region is 66 23 J m 2 K 1 s2, compared to <16 J m 2 K 1 s 1 2 outside the anomaly. Bolometric Bond albedos are similar between the two regions, in the range 0.49–0.70. The mapped portion of the thermally anomalous region coincides in shape and location to a region of high-energy electron deposition from Saturn’s magnetosphere, which also has unusually high near-UV reflectance. It is therefore likely that high-energy electrons, which penetrate Mimas’ surface to the centimeter depths probed by diurnal temperature variations, also alter the surface texture, dramatically increasing its thermal inertia. 2011 Elsevier Inc. The origin and evolution of a differentiated Mimas

In stark contrast with its neighbor moon Enceladus, Mimas is surprisingly geologically quiet, despite an eccentric orbit and distance to Saturn prone to levels of tidal dissipation 30 times higher. While Mimas’ lack of geological activity could be due to a stiff, frigid interior, libration data acquired using the Cassini spacecraft suggest that its interior is not homogeneous. Here, we present ...

Petrology and Geochemistry of Early Cambrian Volcanic Rocks Hosting the Kiruna-type Iron Ore in Anomaly 10 of Sechahun, Central Iran

Early Cambrian volcanic rocks of the Posht-e Badam tectonic block in Central Iran which is hydrothermally altered to green color rocks, hosts the Kiruna-type Iron Oxide-Apatite (IOA) mineralization in Anomaly 10 of Sechahun deposit. Geochemically, these volcanic rocks are classified as high-potassium calc-alkaline and mainly consist of rhyolite and trachyandesite. These rocks are important for ...

Inter-pulse Interval Affects the Size of Single-pulse TMS-induced Motor Evoked Potentials: a Reliability Study

Introduction: Measuring the size of motor evoked potentials (MEPs) induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an investigational technique to show the level of corticospinal excitability however, some of the fundamental methodological aspects of TMS (such as the effects of inter-pulse intervals (IPI) on MEP size) are not fully understood, this issue raises concerns about the re...

On the Analysis of Thermal Infrared Imagery: The Limited Utility of Apparent Thermal Inertia

A spectral window in the thermal infrared permits observations of surface temperature by satellite radiometry. The Heat Capacity Mapping Mission (HCMM) acquired 10-12/tm data at times of day favorable for estimation of surface thermal properties and the surface energy budget. Two variables, surface wetness, which controls evaporation and hence mean surface temperature, and thermal inertia, whic...

Classification of Satellite Resonances in the Solar System

Several pairs of solar system satellites occupy mean motion resonances (MMRs). We divide these into two groups according to their proximity to exact resonance. Proximity is measured by the existence of a separatrix in phase space. MMRs between Io–Europa, Europa–Ganymede, and Enceladus–Dione are too distant from exact resonance for a separatrix to appear. A separatrix is present only in the phas...
